Tips for Those Desperate to Win the Battle against Their Fear of the Dentist

Who wouldn’t have butterflies in their stomach when seeing a dental drill close to their face or thinking a sharp scalpel and being used to cut through their gums? Even the toughest guy in town will feel that slight tingling fear that suddenly things might go wrong. That’s not a situation you want to be in, especially if you’re suffering from some sort of dental phobia.

Event though whatever a dentist is doing on a patient’s mouth is most likely helpful, many people still cannot dispel their fears. One very likely reason why they have that fear of the dentist is that they often associate what they see in movies with real-life experiences that involve sharp tools, cutting, bleeding, and the like. The truth is the dentist is just doing his job and it’s for our benefit, so abandon the idea that you are in mortal danger when you go to a dental office.

If one is scared the procedure might be painful, they need not worry; the dentist is well aware of this concern, even from other patients, which is why he has a boatload of anesthetic drugs in his cabinet to help fight the pain. In fact, there are dentists who are dedicated to administering sedatives. They’ve burnt the midnight oil to master the craft of sedation dentistry, all for the sake of their patients, so there’s no reason to fear.

There’s only one painful experience that one cannot avoid when going through sedation—injection. Before thinking it’s hopeless, we should learn about the different methods of sedation. Intravenous sedation, which involves injection, is only used in invasive procedures. For other procedures, there are other simpler and less painful sedation techniques available, such as nitrous oxide administration.

Another way dental practices are working towards a better dental experience is turning their offices into a more hospitable type of facility. Some practices even have monitors in their operating room where they play nice videos for patients to enjoy while undergoing treatment.

Those are just some of the reasons one can take note of to win against the fear of the dentist.
